This small book contains the names of the enslaved People living on True Blue Planation in 1864. The War Between the States was well underway by then, and the owner of True Blue and his fellow Lowcountry planters already knew that the South was losing the war. 'THE CAUSE," was a lost one.
Look at the names on the ledger. Your name might be on the list; mine is there twice: S. Nancy and O. Nancy, and I know of another Nancy at True Blue--Nancy G. Biblical names were commonly given to enslaved people, as were Greek and Roman ones, although some individuals were allowed to retain their African names. Cudjoe, for example, has Jamaican roots.
