I was in Pawleys Island on September 28 and 29, 2022. I took the photograph on the right and I liked it because I liked the the way the sky and the beach met at the middle where a lone red and white umbrella stood.
I approached the beach barefoot, of course, leaving my shoes at the bottom of the wooded walkway. Only a rookie would have entered the beach with their shoes on. I was sorry I'd followed tradition, however. It was 101 degrees that day and I burned the soles of my feet so bad they keep me awake that night.
Two days later the Pawleys Island Police Department took this picture of the Pawleys Island pier being washed out to sea. They must have been standing only a few feet from where I had stood. That was October 1, 2022, the day that Hurricane Ian nearly breached the whole of Pawleys Island. The storm had slammed into Florida a few days earlier, and then decided to make a second landfall near Pawleys Island.
